From Macarena Hernandez:
John had a nickname for everyone.
Nora Lopez, state editor over at the San Antonio Express-News was La Beauty; E-N Columnist, Jaime Castillo, was El Catrin; Elaine Aradillas, a former E-N reporter, was La Hispanic Barbie; Analisa Nazareno, a former E-N business writer, was La Licha.
I always complained to him about my nickname – no beauty or Barbie for me.
He called me Cacarena. And I called him La Pinche Queena… always made him laugh.

I sent Macarena this message by email yesterday and am posting it here now:
you know, i was just telling eyder the other day that john never had an apodo for me. i knew yours was cacarena. i've met la beauty and spanish barbie (who is friends with some of my friends from elsewhere who worked at the sentinentl) and he even called eyder el baby because i'm older than him, so i'm a cradle robber. so i asked john about it once and he said he was afraid i'd kick his butt if he ever called me anything bad. he looooved to push my buttons at the startlegram, esp. when i was on deadline and flustered. he sat next to me and wouldn't let up until i was on the verge of erupting and i'd flick him off and he'd laugh and finally stop. como le gustaba picar.
oops, hispanic barbie. spanish barbie wears a flamenco dress.
